Preventing Accidental Grouse Mortality

White fence markers are saving sage grouse lives.

Simple Ways to Help Grouse Survive

A tangible way to help sage grouse is to reduce the number of birds killed from human-related activities. Sage grouse collide with fences, are hit on highways, and can drown in livestock water tanks. Today, a vigorous program to mark fences in areas of high sage grouse use is working brilliantly. Now, the grouse see white plastic markers on the barbed wire fences and avoid hitting them.

Another program to modify livestock water tanks to prevent accidental drownings is a win-win for ranchers, too - keeping waters clean and protecting birds. Putting in escape ramps for wildlife is simple, inexpensive, and effective.

The Buffalo, Wyoming, High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) took on a big project in November, 2011, that directly saves sage grouse lives.
